Political influences to prison officials to abstain from giving rights for political prisoners..

It is the responsibility of the Department of Prisons to treat a patient as a patient, UPFA MP Jayantha Samaraweera said.

He said this during the 2017 budget debate on the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms in Parliament yesterday.

Further speaking on the matter he said, “MP Duminda Silva was with us. He is a patient now. Today the Department of Prisons has the responsibility to treat a patient as a patient. This is why he is at the Prison Hospital. Is this wrong? The Department of Prisons should be responsible if a patient such as him is not treated at the Prison Hospital. It is an ethic in medical science to treat a patient if he says that he is suffering from an illness. That is what doctors from the Health Department working at the Department of Prisons are doing. Now this has been subjected to threats saying they will look into it if he is treated. The rights of a patient is that of a normal person, be it a prisoner or suspect. Do not attempt to take this right away from a prisoner.”
