Vardah forces two flights to divert to the Bandaranaike International Airport

Two Chennai bound flights have been diverted to Katunayake International Airport following Cyclone Vardah intensifying in the Bay of Bengal.

Airport duty manager stated that Emirates flight EK651 flying from Dubai to Chennai landed in Katunayake at 9.35 this morning.

At the same time, Chennai bound Sri Lankan’s flight .UL121 also returned to the airport at 9.53 this morning.

Operations Manager at the Katunayake International Airport stated that all Chennai bound flights from Colombo until tomorrow morning have been cancelled

As Cyclone Vardah, intensifies in the Bay of Bengal it is expected to hit Chennai this afternoon.

The Meteorological Department stated that waves off the coast of Mannar and Kankasanthurai could rise between one to two meters. 

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre, Pradeep Kodippili further describes the status.

Following flights of the SriLankan have been cancelled due to the cyclone, U.L. -121, U.L. -123, U.L. -127 and U.L. -129.
