Construction of the world’s tallest Christmas tree on Galle Face Green has recommenced.

Construction of the tree was suspended recently following a statement made by His Eminence Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Ports and Shipping said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake met with the Archbishop yesterday to explain in detail the motivations behind the project.

The delegation led by the Prime Minister, has convinced His Eminence that the World’s tallest Christmas tree was being constructed using donations that were received, and that the government had not made any financial commitment towards the project.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjit had previously stated that constructing the tallest Christmas tree at Galle Face was an unnecessary expenditure and was contrary to the meaning of Christmas.

Furthermore, His Eminence requested people to refrain from indulging in unnecessary spending and instead focus on their personal lives from a spiritual perspective.

Accordingly, construction of the Christmas tree was suspended on the 7th of December.

The Christmas tree will be 325 feet tall and currently its construction is half complete.
