Police initiate investigations into the assault of a Hiru journalist by the Navy commander

Police investigations have already been initiated over the assault of a Hiru journalist during the Sathyagraha launched by workers of Magampura Port in Hambantota.

The investigations are being conducted on the instruction of Hambantota ASP Prasanna Alwis.

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunarathna reprimanded Hiru journalist using foul language and assaulting him, while the journalist was covering the Sathyagraha on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the assault of the Hiru journalist took center stage at several media conferences held in Colombo this morning.

Pivituru Hela Urumaya General Secretary MP Udaya Gammanpila stated in a media conference that the Navy Commander should resign for the sake of the honor of Sri Lanka Navy.

Addressing a media conference convened by Inter University Students Federation, its convener Lahiru Weerasekera also commented on the incident.

At the same time, demonstration were organised by Digamadulla District Media Personnel Association and Gampaha District Media Collective against the assault on journalists.

Minister P Harrison who addressed the ceremony held to repair a road in Kunchikulama made the following comments relating to the assault.

Meanwhile, day 6 of the Sathyagraha launched by Magampura port workers is continuing today as Sri Lanka Navy and Police have been deployed for security of the Magampura Port.
