Sri Lankan airlines has decided to delay all flights departing to Chennai until 7 am tomorrow due to cyclone Vardha in the Bay of Bengal.

Due to the cyclone intensifying, two Chennai bound flights were diverted to the Katunayake International Airport.

One of which was Sri Lankan’s flight. UL121  was initially en route to Chennai.

It has been reported that due to the Chennai flights being temporarily suspended, nearly 500 Sri Lankan devotees who were on their way to the Dambadiwa pilgrimage, have been stranded at the Chennai airport.

One of the passengers who have been stranded noted that the locals at the Chennai airport have been highly inconvenienced as they are being requested to leave the airport by officials.

The MET Department stated that due to the impact of the Vardha cyclone, showers are expected in the Western, North West, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

Meanwhile, 2 people have been killed and thousands have been evacuated to safe locations as a result of the Vardha cyclone.
