The Minister of Port and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga has agreed to hold discussions with the group of employees from Hambantota Magampura Port who are engaged in a sathyakgraha demanding absorption into Ports Authority.

The union convener for Magampura Port employees’ Chanaka Sampath said that five representatives from his union would participate in the discussion with the Minister this afternoon.

However, sathyakgraha at the port will continue for the eighth consecutive day today.

Meanwhile the International Journalists’ Forum says that action must be taken regarding navy commander Vice Admiral Raveendra C. Wijegunarathna who assaulted and verbally abused a reporter from Hiru, who was on location covering the sathyakgraha at the Magampura Port.

Issuing a communiqué the Forum said that it expressed its regret about the incident.

The incident took place on the 10th of this month, while the navy had been deployed to intervene during the sathyakgraha.
