Protest campaigns and media conferences were held in several parts of the country today as well against the assault on the Hiru journalist by the Navy Commander at the Hambantota port premises.

A tense situation erupted on December 10th between the strikers and the Sri Lanka Navy as navy personnel intervened to disperse a Sathyagraha by port workers.

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra C Wijegunarathna had used foul language to scold Hiru journalist before he assaulted the latter.

Central Province Working Journalists Association, Independence Media Foundation and Central Province Media Collective conducted a joint protest in the city hub of Kandy against the assault on Hiru Journalist.

At the same time, International Federation of Journalists has issued a communiqué with regard to the assault on the Hiru Journalist. The federation stated that it has combined with the Free Media Movement to show protest against the incident.

It also categorically condemned the incitement and asked the government to take stern action against the Navy commander.

Meanwhile, politicians and civil society organizations also expressed their views at several media conference held in Colombo today.

Meanwhile, All Ceylon Working Journalists Association request to join them in a mass protest to be conducted against the assault on the Hiru Journalists by the Navy Commander.
