Magampura port strikers meet to decide whether to report for duty

A meeting is being held by Magampura port workers to decide on whether to end their 9-day strike and report for duty today.

Chairman of Magampura workers committee I.K. Omesh told our news team that the outcome of the ongoing meeting will be announced after 12.30 this afternoon.

Meanwhile, subject Minister Arjuna Ranatunga announced yesterday that Magampura port workers who do not report for duty before 2pm today will be considered as having resigned from their employment.

At the same time, Hambantota Magistrate Manjula Karunarathna gave an order yesterday that the strikers should not damage public property and disrupt port operations.

A group representing the protesters had meet with subject minister Arjuna Ranatunga in Colombo yesterday.

Magampura workers committee chairman I.K. Omesh said that the meeting will draw its attention to the proposals made during yesterday’s discussion with the minister.
