Industry and Commerce Affair Minister Rishard Bathiudeen has instructed his officials to import 10 thousand metric tons of rice to control the increase in the price of rice in the market.

The Minister has also instructed officials to immediately purchase 20,000 metric tons of buffer stocks from the Paddy Marketing Board.

The ministry also stated that such paddy will be milled and will be sold through Lak Sathosa outlets at 78 rupees per kilogram.

Meanwhile, addressing a media conference held in Colombo this afternoon, Rural Affairs Minister P Harrison explained the reasons behind the sky rocketing of price of rice.

Meanwhile, Small and Medium rice millers charged that an artificial rice shortage has been created by a few large scale millers.

Addressing a media conference held in Dambulla, national organizer of All Ceylon Farmers confederation Namal Karunarathna said that the rice prices have increased as the Paddy Marketing Board is playing to the tune of several big time rice millers.

However, Rural Affairs Minister P Harrison said that the price of rice will reduce within the next two weeks when imported rice stocks reach the market.
