The Postal Department has taken steps to cancel leaves of all postal employees to prevent the breakdown of postal services as a result of the strike.

Accordingly employees’ leave were cancelled from mid-night yesterday till mid-night tomorrow.

The combined Postal Trade Unions’ Front launched a 48-hour strike from last mid-night, over seven demands including the removal of irregularities in the promotion and recruitment procedure.

Front’s co-convener Chintaka Bandara said that the strike was launched as recently held discussions with subject minister M. H. Abdul Haleem with regard to employee demands were not successful.

The Front convener warned that work at the Central Exchange as well as at post offices and sub-offices island-wide could completely break down as a result of the strike.

Expressing his views while participating at a media briefing held in Kandy yesterday Minister M. H. Abdul Haleem said that an invisible hand was operating behind the strike.
