The COPE chairman MP Sunil Handunnetti has written to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya requesting him to take up the COPE report on the Central Bank Bond issue during the first parliament session next year.
He mentioned in his letter that he has already presented the relevant report to the parliament on October 28th.
MP Handunnetti stated in his letter that it is up to the Speaker to take a prompt decision as the COPE report has already being submitted to the parliament.
However, MP Handunnetti says that the Prime Minister has referred the COPE report to the Attorney General.
The MP says in his letter that taking such action by the Prime Minister is a form of taking over the Speaker’s powers.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Office issued a communiqué this afternoon to reply to the letter sent by the COPE chairman to the speaker.
The communiqué stated that the COPE chairman is attempting to create a wrong impression with regard to his report.
In addition, the communiqué of the Prime Minister’s Office stated that the COPE chairman makes allegations against the Prime Minister in a backdrop where committee secretary’s sending the report to the Attorney General on December 8.
