Bandaranaike International Airport to be closed for runway repair from Jan 6

The Bandaranaike International Airport will be closed for eight hours daily from January 6 to April 6 for repairs on its only runway, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

It was noted that it has been 30 years since any renovations had taken place.

During an observation tour of the airport yesterday the Minister said that accordingly the airport would be closed daily from 8. 30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

The Minister requested passengers departing from Katunayake arrive at the airport at least five hours prior to their departure time.

During this period, approximately 20 flights will be cancelled per day.

Renovations of the airport, being undertaken by a Chinese company will cost Rs. 7.2 billion.
