The Development Special Provisions draft act was defeated when it was presented to the Uva Provincial Council for obtaining its approval.

While nine voted in favour of the act, 13 voted against it.

The relevant Development Special Provisions draft act sent by the central government was presented at the Uva Provincial Council’s monthly meeting which was held yesterday.

Our reporter said that Uva Provincial Council Chairman A. M. Buddhadasa gave opportunity to all councilors to express their views on the subject.

Subsequently the 11 UPFA councilors and the two JVP councilors voted against the draft act.

Our reporter stated that the UNP councilors voted in favour of the draft act.

Uva Province Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake abstained from voting.

Allegations were made that the Development Special Provisions Draft Act will create a super minister and a supreme minister.

However the minister of Development Strategy and International Trade Malik Samarawickrema said that the relevant draft act will be presented in parliament in February.
