The Ministry of Finance says that through the budget, priority has been given to take immediate action to relieve the traffic congestion in Colombo.

The Minister of Finance, Ravi Karunanayake noted that accordingly, the proposed light rail transit service will be activated without delay. 

The ministry noted that the light rail transit service will encompass the areas of Borella, Kottawa, Battaramulla, Kaduwela, Maradana, Mattakkuliya, Kadawatha, and Bambalapitiya. 

It has been stated that currently the average driving speed in Colombo has dropped down to 8km per hour.

The Ministry noted that by 2020, if action is not taken, this will drop down further to 6 km per hour.
