The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute says that in comparison to the previous years, the prices of vegetables have decreased by 50 to 60 per cent.

Research officer of the institute, Duminda Priyadarshana noted that the cause of the reduction is due to receiving more produce to the market from upcountry, central province and low country.

An increase in the prices of vegetable was seen in the months of December and January during the past years.

However, Research officer of Hector Kobbekaduwa agro research institute, Duminda Priyadarshana further noted that currently the prices of vegetables have decreased in the market.

Meanwhile, the prices of paddy which surged in the past few days remain unchanged.

It has been reported that the selling price of a kilogram of Nadu rice is at 90 rupees while a kilo of Samba rice is at 95 rupees.

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce stated that in order to neutralize this situation, the 20,000 metric tonnes of state owned paddy will be distributed to the market.

In addition, 10,000 metric tonnes of rice is to be imported by the government.
