Former Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake passed away this noon at a private hospital in Colombo.

He was 83 years old at the time of his demise.

Former Premier Wickremanayake functioned as a presidential advisor at the time of his death.

He was educated at Millewa Primary School, Dharmapala Vidyalaya  Pannipitiya, Hartley College- Point Pedro and Ananda College- Colombo.

Subsequently, he studied to become a Barrister of Law in the United Kingdom.

He was elected to parliament in 1960 from Horana under the Lanka Sama Samaja Party.

He joined the SLFP in 1962 and functioned as the party general secretary in 1978.

He was appointed Prime Minister from 2000 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2010 and functioned in the Public Administration, Home Affairs, Buddha Sasana and Plantation ministry portfolios.

The remains of former Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayaka will be placed at the parliament from 10.30am to 11.30am tomorrow for the parliamentarians to pay their last respects.

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa who visited the private hospital where former Prime Minister Wickremanayake had received treatment said that the death of late Wickremanayake was a great loss to the country and the nation.

In addition, President Maithripala Sirisena has directed the relevant authorities to conduct the funeral of late Rathnasiri Wickremanayake with full state patronage.

Meanwhile, MP Vidura Wickremanayake stated that the final rites of late Rathnasiri Wickremanayake will be held at Horana in the afternoon of December 31st.
