Update: Parliament pays last respects to former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake

The remains of former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake were brought from a private funeral parlor to parliament complex this morning.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya together with other parliamentarians including a former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader R. Sampandan were among the politicians who paid their last respects.

The remains will be escorted to the late prime minister’s residence at Millawa in Horana this afternoon.

The final rites of former Premier will be held under state patronage on December 31.

President Maithripala Sirisena said that former PM Ratnasiri Wickremanayake would be identified as a politician in Sri Lankan politics who expressed his views in a straight forward manner.

The statement was made whilst issuing a message of condolence following the passing of the former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.

The President identified him as a leader, who as a man of strong principles, offered his fullest dedication towards the work of the SLFP whenever the party encountered challenges.

Former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake passed away yesterday at a private hospital in Colombo.

He was 83 years old at the time of passing.

The Former Premier was functioning as a presidential advisor at the time of his passing.

The remains of the former Prime Minister will be placed at the parliament from 10.30am to 11.30amtoday for the parliamentarians to pay their last respects.

President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to conduct the funeral of the former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake with full state honors.
