Development (Special Provisions) draft bill defeated at Western Province Provincial Council

Western Provincial council also defeated the resolution with regard to the Development Special Provisions Bill by 24 majority votes today.

Accordingly, the Draft Bill is rejected by 7 out of 9 Provincial Councils already.

The Northern Provincial Council rejected the Bill even without taking it for debate.

At the beginning of the session, Chief Government Whip of the Council Gunasiri Jayanath stated that there is no necessity to debate over the Bill.

Opposition Chief Whip George Perera objected the proposal by Jayanath and, Council chairman Sunil Wijerathna and Opposition Leader Manju Sri Arangala intervened in the dialogue.

However the council session was adjourned for 10 minutes after several UPFA members tore the copies of the Draft Bill.

However, the resolution over the proposed Draft Bill was defeated by 24 votes. 58 members voted against while 28 councilors voted for the resolution.

UPFA and JVP councilors voted against while many UNP councilors voted for the Bill. 18 out of 104 councilors of the Western Province were absent during the vote taking today.

6 members including Jathika Hela Urumaya Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, UPFA’s Keerthi Kariyawasam, UNP’s Anuradha Wimalarathna and two members of Democratic People’s Front led by Minister Mano Ganeshan abstained from voting.

Meanwhile, Eastern Provincial Council Secretary M.C.M. Sherif said that a vote taking over the Development Special Provisions Draft Bill is scheduled to be held on January 24th.
