The President has directed officials to publish a gazette by broadening the parameters of Wilpattu Wildlife Sanctuary and naming it as a Wild Life Zone.

Following a revelation by Hiru CIA investigative program, the President had called a discussion with the officials of the Ministry of environment.

The President has taken the crucial decision after he met with authorities this morning.

At the same time, the President has taken steps to send a team of experts to investigate the ongoing deforestation in the Mannar district.

Having watched Hiru CIA program, President Maithripala Sirisena enquired more details from HIRU.

It is a welcoming signal to receive instant reaction from the first citizen of the country following the exposure of a national disaster of this nature.

Later in the afternoon, President’s Media Unit issued a communiqué that the President has issued directive to launch a constant air surveillance program to monitor all forest reserves in the island including Wilpattu.

At the same time, the President has instructed authorities to take strict legal action against those who engaged in forest destruction, regardless of their political or any other status.

He has instructed to include officers of the environment, forest conservation, wildlife, environmental protection organizations and journalists in the proposed investigative team to be sent to Mannar.

Hiru CIA program exposed for the first time about deforestation being carried out in the guise of resettlement in Kallaru in April 2015.

Thousands of acres belonged to the Forest Department had been cleared illegally even without obtaining government permission.

Following continuous revelations by CIA team, President Sirisena issued an order banning the clearance of forests in the area.

However, CIA team revealed again that forests belonged to the Forest Department are destroyed in Vilattikulam area, disregarding the President’s orders.

According to Satharasinghe, if deforestation is being carried out in the area, we enquired him why electric China saw machines are carried into the forest.

At the same time, representatives of the Collective of Environmental Organizations met Forest Department Director General to question the same matter.
