Sri Lankans and people across the world celebrated the dawn of the year 2017 on a grand scale.

Several religious observances had been organized especially at Sri Pada, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya and Katharagama.

Meanwhile, a slowdown in the Earth’s rotation resulted in a one second delay to the 2017 New Year’s countdown.

It is the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service in France which continuously keeps track of the Earth’s rotation and determines the need to have a leap second.
