A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck 284 kilometres south-west of the Fiji capital Suva, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says.

According to the USGS the quake was at a depth of 15.2 kilometres.

Initially the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning but withdrew it later.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake has struck the North Sea off the coast of North Yorkshire, the British Geological Survey (BGS) said.

The quake hit 150 miles east of the seaside town of Scarborough.
