Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama says that the signing of the vesting of Hambantota Harbour to a Chinese Company is scheduled to take place at the end of this month.

The Minister said that the agreement would be signed after discussions with cabinet, obtaining its nod  and submitting it to the attorney general to obtain his instructions.

A ministerial sub-committee has also been set up to discuss about the vesting of the Hambantota Harbour with a Chinese company and taking a final decision.

However the Minister said that the work on the Southern Development Economic Zone was scheduled to be launched day-after-tomorrow.

Meanwhile the Government Information Department said that reports published to the effect that 15,000 acres from the Hambantota district would be vested with China under the Southern Development Plan were false.

Issuing a communiqué the Government Information Department points out that a group of bankrupt politicians were launching a corrupt plan of building a public opinion against the development plan making false propaganda.

The communiqué states that identification of 1200, 2000 and 7000 acres of land has also been made in the Hambantota, Matara and Monaragala under the relevant development programme.

The communiqué issued by the Government Information Department   says that action is being taken to inform the Chief Incumbents of the Buddhist Nikayas regarding the agreement due to be signed.
