Hambantota - Southern Development Project was launched this morning under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe.

A tense situation erupted in the vicinity of the premises when a group of MPs from the Joint Opposition along with several residents from the area engaged in a protest.

Security was tightened in the Tellijjawila area in Hambantota this morning where the Southern Development Project is scheduled to be launched.

However, MPs from the Joint Opposition along with residents and monks launched a protest march from Prabodharama Temple in Ambalantota.

Although tight security measures were taken along all the access roads leading to the premises where the ceremony is held, the protestors reached the premises through alternate by-roads.

The protestors arrived close to the premises despite security measures taken by security units.

The protestors were reported to be behaving in an unruly manner hurling stones at security personnel.

It was also reported that IGP Pujith Jayasundara too arrived at the scene.

With the tense situation further intensifying, Police had fired tear gas and water cannon at the protestors.

10 persons including 3 Police Officers were injured during the clash and are currently receiving treatment at the Hambantota hospital.

While these protests took place nearby, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka and other officials gathered to declare open the plaque signifying the launch of the Project.
