Department of Government Information announced the ethics, regulations and guidelines in drone journalism.
The Department is announcing these during the time where public are questioning about the incident where drones owned by our station were taken by Prime Minister’s security division as we covered the Hambantota clash.
Department of Government Information will give approval for the use of drones in a news coverage under 14 sections.
It stated that that the ‘Media Ministry is keen to work with the Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant bodies in the near future to streamline these regulations and make it easier for accredited media organisations to obtain permission to fly drones’.
It further asked drone users to call the Department for clarifications or to approach the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka for drone operations.
However, SriLanka Human Rights Commission’s former CommissionerDr. Prathibha Mahanama Hewa is not approving the limitations of the use of drones.
He said these moves are not needed during an era where the Right to Information Act is implemented. He said it is not right to control mechanisms used to serve the true information to the public.
Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakody addressing a press conference said a system will be formed after discussing with the Department of Government Information.
