Treasurer of the SLFP, Minister S.B. Dissanayake stated that the executive presidency cannot be abolished according to the promise made by the President during the presidential elections.

He expressed these views speaking to media after paying a courtesy call on the Chief Prelate of Malwathu Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera this morning.

The Minister stated that the president vowed at the presidential elections, to not change clauses in the constitution that would lead to a referendum.

At present, the Supreme Court has ruled that the executive presidency can only be abolished through a referendum and therefore, the minister stated that this cannot happen.

Journalists inquired about the upcoming local government elections as well.
