Police commence search operations for army deserters who have failed to surrender

The Department Of Immigration And Emigration and the police have been assigned the task of enforcing the law against army deserters who failed to surrender to the army during the amnesty period.

Media spokesperson for the Army, Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne stated that nearly 42,500 deserters from the tri-forces are yet to surrender.

The amnesty period was from the 1st to the 31st of December last year, during which time 39 officers and over 8000 other-rankers surrendered to the Army.
