Appeal court orders medical council to register SAITM students

The Appeal Court passed a verdict today that the students who complete the medical degree offered by the Malabe Private Medical School are permitted to be registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

The verdict was issued by President of the Court of Appeal Vijith Malalgoda and Appeal Court Judge S. Thurairajah.

The petition was filed by a female student of the Malabe Private Medical School.

17 persons including the Health Minister, Ministry Secretary and the Sri Lanka Medical Council were named as respondents.

The Court of Appeal rejected the initial objections filed by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

Later, President of the Appeal Court Vijith Malalgoda said that the degree offered by the Malabe Private medical School is legal as the institution has been registered under the University Grants Commission Act since 2011.

In addition, the appeal court ordered the Medical Council to take action to register the students of the Malabe Private Medical School as there are no legal barriers to do so.

The Joint Chairman of the Parents Association of the Malabe Private Medical School T.M.K.B. Tennakoon expressed his views after the announcement of the judgment.

Meanwhile, GMOA;’s General Secretary and its Media Spokesman Dr. Naveen Soyza and Dr. Haritha Aluthge respectively were present at Courts today.

The two GMOA officials who met journalists outside the court room said that they expect to obtain further legal advice on the matter.
