The Justice Ministry is looking at amending existing laws on abortions and draft separate legislations as amendments to the Penal Code and to the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.

A special committee of lawyers was appointed to look into the matter.

PC Ranjith Aluvihare will head the committee.

Reports say that the ministry is looking at legalizing abortions in cases of rape and incest, underage pregnancies (pregnancy occurring in a girl below 16) and serious foetal impairment.

Law Aid Commission member, Senior Counsel U. R. De Silva stated that the cabinet has been notified about these developments.
