Police fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse a protest march jointly organized by the JVP and the trade unions for port protection.

The protest was launched against an alleged decision taken by the government to transfer the North Pier of the Colombo Port to an Indian company.

The protest march began from the main gate of the Port Authority.

However, police fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd near the Lotus roundabout when the port workers attempted to forcefully walk towards the Presidential Secretariat.

Addressing protesters, Chairman of All Ceylon Port Employees Association and JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti said that all public enterprises sold out by this government will be taken over under a future government by the people.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of All Ceylon Port Employees Association Chandrasiri Mahagamage told our news team that police had obtained a Court injunction against Chairman of the National Trade Union Federation K.D. Lal Kantha.

He said therefore, his union refused to accept the injunction.
