The Right to Information Act comes into force from today.

Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Gayantha Karunatilleke said earlier that the relevant announcement had been gazetted.

According to the Right to Information Act, every citizen has the right to access to information available with the property trustee or administration of any ministry, department or statutory board of government institution.

Public authorities from which information can be obtained have been named. The y include a large number of institutions including Ministries, Statutory Boards, Corporations, and Companies belonging to the Government, Local Government Bodies, and universities.

Similarly facts which cannot be disclosed, and if they are, it would be considered offensive have been mentioned in the Act.

Accordingly, revealing confidential information connected with international agreements, sensitive information pertaining to the government’s economic or financial policies as well as information connected with personal medical reports are considered punishable offences.
