Government Medical Officers Association has decided to engage in a 4 hour token trade union action beginning at 8 am till noon today.

The association is condemning the police assault that took place during the protest launched by the active medical students committee, where tear gas and water cannons where utilised.

Meanwhile, 21 students who were arrested during the protest march were released on bail after been produced before the Fort magistrate’s court.

The active medical students committee launched a protest march against the SAITM private medical university yesterday which commenced from the Colombo university medical faculty.

Students representing the Inter-University Students’ Federation also participated in the protest.

Police approached the Colombo magistrate’s court, in order to obtain a court order to prevent the protest march from commencing.

However, Colombo Additional Magistrate Ranga Disanayake during this instance noted that protesting is the right of the people, and that a court order would not be issued in this regard.

He issued a court order, to prevent such protests if it inconveniences the public.
