A man who attempted a knife attack on soldiers on guard at the Louvre Museum in Paris was shot and injured on Friday. This clearly highlighted France’s security and terror threat just three months before the French presidential election.

The man who is believed to be in his 30s struck at around 10am on a stairway in the Carrousel du Louvre which is an underground shopping centre close to the entrance to museum. He was wielding a knife running at a group of soldiers on patrol shouting “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is greatest”.

Many tourists around the area were held in secure locations of the Louvre, known as one of the world’s most visited museums, after the man was shot five times by soldiers who were on patrol outside.

One soldier was slightly injured during the incident and the French Prime Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve described what took place as terrorist in nature.

Even though suspect has not been identified, French police had established that the man was a 29 year old Egyptian who arrived in France on January 26 having obtained a tourist visa in Dubai, according to Paris prosecutor.
