The 69th Independence Day was celebrated with much pomp and pageantry this morning under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at Galle Face Green.

Inspector General of Police, Commanders of the tri forces arrived at the ceremony and were followed by the defence secretary, secretary to the president and chief minister of the western province.

Field Marshall, Minister Sarath Fonseka and minister of ​home affairs arrived at the function subsequently.

Later on, Chief Justice and the Speaker arrived at the occasion followed by former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunga.

Afterwards, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe too arrived at the ceremony. 

President Maithripala Sirisena arrived at the ceremony around 8.45 AM and was greeted by the prime minister and the speaker.

Many ministers, members of the parliament and many foreign dignitaries graced the occasion.

The 69th independence day celebrations got underway with president Maithripala Sirisena hoisting the flag.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Commanders of the Tri forces and the inspector general of police escorted the president to the podium upon singing the national anthem.

Following the Military Honours President Maithripala Sirisena addressed the Nation.

President Sirisena said that reconciliation and harmony would help in bringing about political stability and development.
