The government has decided to name nearly 900 rebels who led the Uva Wellassa struggle in 1818 as patriots.

Accordingly, the President will sign in to a new gazette revoking the previous one issued by British colonials which had named them as traitors.

Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka said that the signing of the gazette will be held at the historical Sacred Temple of the Tooth premisse in Kandy on March 1st.

Earlier, 19 rebels including Keppetipola Adhikaram who led the Uva Wellassa struggle against the Colonial British were named as patriots.

These rebels were declared as traitors by the then Colonial British Governor in Sri Lanka, Robert Browning for giving leadership to Uva Wellassa revolt.

Minister Karunathilaka said that the government decided to name the 900 rebels who participated in the revolt as patriots following a request made to the President by the families of the rebels.
