The GMOA at a press briefing convened after a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena stated that several proposals were made to the president on the issue with regard to SAITM and protecting the rights of patients.

Representatives from the Government Medical Officers’ Association and the Government Dental Surgeons’ Association met with President Maithripala Sirisena this morning at the President’s House.

At the meeting, President Maithreepala Sirisena has stated that a committee of experts will be appointed to advice in order to solve the issue with regard to the Malabe- SAITM private medical university.

Representatives of the associations have provided descriptive facts regarding the matter to the president.

The President has assured to consider proposals and recommendations from all parties as well as opinions from scholars representing a spectrum of fields in proposing a solution to the matter.

Accordingly, the president has noted that a decision will be made based on the recommendations of the committee of experts.

Meanwhile, the GMOA had listed the proposals presented to the president under 6 main facts including the Minister of Health acting as per the Medical Ordinance respecting the technical decision of the Medical Council.  

Furthermore, they have listed the duties of the medical council in protecting the rights of patients as well as the conduct of the ministers of Higher Education and Health with regard to the SAITM issue.

The Government Dental Surgeons’ Association also has presented several long term and short term proposals with regard to solving these issues.

The Minister of Highways and Higher Education, Lakshman Kiriella stated that the Medical Council was stubborn with regard to the SAITM issue.

He expressed these views speaking to media following a ceremony held in Kandy today.

The Inter University Students’ Federation and the Medical Faculty Student Activists’ Committee also expressed their views regarding the Malabe private medical college at a press briefing convened in Colombo today.
