The Deans from eight state medical faculties had discussions with the Minister of Higher Education Lakshman Kiriella, Deputy Minister Mohan Lal Grero and officials at the University Grants Commission regarding SAITM.  They agreed to submit several proposals to the administration of the private medical college in Malabe.

During the next six months, the ministry of Higher Education and Highways, University Grants Commission, the SLMC and other stake holders will jointly develop an operational procedure applicable to non-state medical education.

Following yesterday’s discussion, the two parties also agreed to propose to the administration of SAITM to suspend further admission of medical students for a period of six months until the periodic review of the medical degree programme is conducted by the ministry of Higher Education.

They had also proposed that students from SAITM who have passed the final MBBS examination must undergo a further clinical training.

This would require one month training dedicated to the areas of surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and paediatrics, at a state hospital.

At the conclusion of this period, the students must pass a licensing examination conducted by the SLMC.
