Sri Lanka Navy categorically denied reports released by Indian media that an Indian fisherman died after his vessel was shot at by Sri Lankan Navy.

Navy Media spokesman Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walakuluge said that Navy personnel are required to obtain permission from their commander prior to firing any shots.

Indian media have accused that the Sri Lankan Navy used small boats to shoot at the Indian fishermen.

However, the Navy spokesman pointed out that small boats are used only to transport passengers.

He also stated that such small boats cannot be used for deep sea operations.

The navy spokeman mentioned that the Sri Lanka Navy has been informed that 5 thousand Indian fishermen would come to participate in the annual feast of the St. Anthony Church on Kachchathivu Island to be held on March11 and 12.

The Navy is making necessary arrangements for the annual feast.

The renovation of the Church was also carried out by the Navy.

It is suspected that negative stories of this kind are being fabricated with the intention of sabotaging the annual feast of the Church.
