Indian Navy have arrested 10 Sri Lankan fishermen who allegedly entered Indian territorial waters yesterday.

Indo Sri Lanka fishermen’s Association Federation Advisor S.T. Anthonymutthu told our news team that Indian Navy has also seized the two fishing boats.

The Sri Lankan Navy media spokesman Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walakuluge said that the Indian Navy had informed them of the arrest.

He also said that the Fisheries Ministry has also been updated on the issue.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu fishermen have staged a protest over the death of one of their fellow fishermen following a shooting in Rameshwaram.

The 22-year-old victim has been identified as Bisthro of Rameshwaram.

Indian media reported that the fisherman died in a shoot-out involving the Sri Lankan Navy.

Foreign Ministry says that preliminary investigations revealed that the Sri Lanka navy did not shoot at Indian fishermen.

Issuing a communiqué the ministry noted that the safety of fishermen is important and the government would act humanely in any instance.

The communiqué further noted that the government of Sri Lanka expresses its deepest regrets regarding the alleged shooting incident.
