A tense situation erupted in parliament today as the speaker announced that NFF MPs cannot be allowed to remain independent in the house.

Responding to a previous request by NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa, speaker Karu Jayasuriya stated in his announcement that parliament cannot accept NFF MPs to sit as a separate political party because they have been elected to parliament by contesting under the UPFA ticket.

NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa attempted to express his views but the speaker told him that he would give him opportunity to speak on another day.

In this instance, MP Dinesh Gunawardana continued to express his views while Joint Opposition MPs walked to the well of the house disregarding the Speaker’s order.

At that point, the Speaker adjourned the house for 10 minutes.

However, Joint Opposition MPs raised objections again when the sessions were re-commenced.

Under such circumstances, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove MP Gunawardana for his disruptive behaviour until the end of today’s sessions.

The house was adjourned for the second time later.

Gunawardana remained in the house and continued to disrupt the sessions despite the attempt by the Sergeant-at-arms to remove him from the chambers.

Thereafter, Speaker told Gunawardana that police will be called to remove him from the chambers.

The house was adjourned for the third time.

However MP Gunawardana did not leave the chambers even in the presence of the police.

Later, a resolution was presented by leader of the house minister Lakshman Kiriella to suspend MP Dinesh Gunawardana for one week.

Then, a vote taking was demanded by the Joint Opposition over the resolution.

85 members voted for the resolution while 22 voted against.

However, JVP MPs abstained from voting but the SLFP MPs who represent the government voted for the resolution.
