The protests launched by South Indian fishermen on March 6th, alleging that one of their fellowmen died after being shot at by a Sri Lankan Navy officer, were called off yesterday.

The protests were suspended following discussions they had with Indian Central government ministers Nirmala Seetharaman and Pon Radha-Krishnan.

Pilgrims from Tamil Nadu missed out on participating in the annual feast of St. Anthony’s church at Kachchathivu Island this year due to the protests.

Meanwhile, minister of Fisheries Mahinda Amaraweera said that investigations have revealed the Sri Lankan Navy is not responsible for the shooting in which a South Indian fisherman died.

Addressing a ceremony in Suriyawewa yesterday, minister Amaraweera said that he always act on behalf of the Sri Lankan fishing community.
