Aris 13 that was said to be hijacked by Somali pirates is not a Sri Lankan registered fuel freighter, Sri Lanka Navy says.

Navy Spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walakuluge said the crew of eight reported to be on the vessel were not Sri Lankans.

John Steed of Oceans Beyond Piracy was reported saying that the vessel was an UAE-owned one and Sri Lankan-flagged. Reports also said that it was Greek-owned and Comoros-flagged with plans to re-flag it to Sri Lanka.

Somali pirates are suspected to have hijacked the vessel after it sent a distress call, turned off its tracking system and altered course for the Somali coast.
