The election of the 24th chairman of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka will take place today.

Accordingly arrangements have been made for the election to take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 77 centres including Colombo.

BASL communiqué said that while President’s Counsel Solicitor General Suhada Gamlath had been appointed as the Returning Officer of the office-bearer election, he would be conducting the office-bearer election in Colombo.

In addition, District Judges, Additional District Judges and Magistrates will serve as Returning Officers at Divisional Court election centres.

Attorneys-at-law U. R. de Silva, Anura Meddegoda and R.R. S. Tan-ga-rajaa have submitted their nominations for the BASL chairman’s post.

Attorney-at-law Amal Randeniya has already been appointed uncontested as the secretary.

14,000 attorneys-at-law are eligible to vote at today’s election.

While the election was scheduled to be held on 21st of last month, it was postponed indefinitely at the time.

The reason given by the BASL, for the postponement, was a lack of cooperation from the judges.
