Diplomats open discussions to rescue 8 Sri Lankan seamen

Sri Lanka Navy stated today that discussions have been initiated with the Somali Government in order to release the 8 Sri Lankans captured by Somali pirates.

According to Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Chaminda Walakuluge, Captain of the hijacked vessel, Nicolas Anthony, is a resident of Crow Island.

Others in captive are: Ruwan Sampath from Mathugama, Dilipa Ranaweera from Galle, Sunil Perera from Kandana, Lahiru Indunil from Akuressa, Jayantha Kalubowila from Horana, Janaka Samendra from Devi Nuwara and A. Shanmugam from Negombo.

The vessel was hijacked while it was transporting crude oil from the State of Djibouti to Mogadishu of Somalia last Monday.

Navy spokesman also stated that the hijackers have not been identified clearly as yet.

Meanwhile, foreign media reported today that the hijackers have demanded a ransom in order to release the vessel and its crew.

Media reports also stated that armed pirates have got onboard the hijacked vessel.

However, Sri Lanka Navy stated that it is not officially confirmed whether the hijackers have demanded a ransom to release the vessel and its Sri Lankan crew.

Meanwhile, relatives of the Sri Lankan crew members of the hijacked vessel complained to the Foreign Ministry this morning requesting the government to rescue the victims without delay.
