US support Sri lanka for its 2 years request to work on UN human rights council resolution

The United States commended Sri Lanka for agreeing once again to co-sponsor the UN resolution promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human right and applauded the administration of President Maithripala Sirisena for its continuing efforts to promote reconciliation.

The US invites like-minded UNHRC member, countries to support the new resolution to support Sri Lanka whose government earlier this week urged the UN Human Rights Council core group to give Sri Lanka a 24-month extension to work on the US sponsored resolution that awaits a favourable response from the UN body.

Issuing a statement on the draft resolution on Sri Lanka presented to the UN Human Rights Council on March 13th by the United States and other members of the Friends of Sri Lanka Core Group, the U.S. State Department said the resolution reflects the United States' enduring commitment to lasting peace and justice for all the people of Sri Lanka.

The United States said it worked in close consultation with the United Kingdom, Montenegro, and Macedonia, and in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka, to draft the resolution.
