Former bus driver sentenced to over 37 years of rigorous imprisonment

A SLTB driver was sentenced to 37 years rigorous imprisonment today after being found guilty of an accident in which 14 passengers were killed and another 44 were injured in 2003.

Kurunegala High Court judge Menaka Wijesundara passed the jail sentence after the case was concluded today.

It is stated that the bus which was driven by the suspect veered off the road and crashed against a tree in Gokarelle in 2003.

Accordingly, a 28-year jail sentence was passed for causing the death to 21 passengers and another nine years jail sentence for causing injuries to 44 passengers.

It is reported that this is the longest jail sentence ever passed on a convicted driver in the history of Sri Lanka.
