President Maithripala Sirisena, who left the country yesterday for a three-day state visit to Russia arrived in Moscow, marking the first state visit by a Sri Lankan head of the state in four decades.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Morgulov, Chief of Protocol and other high officials of the Russian Federation warmly received the President on arrival at the Domo-dedovo International Airport in Moscow.

The ceremonial welcome will be held at the Kremlin in Red Square today where President Vladimir Putin will welcome President Sirisena with a guard of honor.

President Sirisena is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin today in Kremlin in Red Square.

He will also meet Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev and other Russian leaders.

This is the first official tour of a Sri Lankan leader to Russia since 1974.

President Sirisena will also place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow and attend the ceremony to mark 60th Anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The two countries will enter into several new Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding to expand bilateral cooperation in several fields such as energy, trade and commerce, agriculture, education, judiciary and Defence.

The visit is expected to strengthen friendship and cooperation further and enhance bilateral trade.
