Sri Lanka, Russia pledge to enhance economic cooperation

Sri Lanka and Russia have pledged to enhance long term economic cooperation and have vowed to work towards building a strong foundation to take bilateral relations to a new high.

These sentiments were expressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Maithripala Sirisena during the historic meeting at the Green Room at the Kremlin yesterday.

President Maithripala was given a warm welcome from his Russian counterpart on Thursday afternoon.

The two leaders held discussions on a wide variety of topics.

Referring to the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Russia, the two Presidents agreed to take effective steps to ensure strong bilateral relations continued between the two countries.

President Sirisena, recalling his last meeting with the Russian President in Goa last year thanked him for extending the invitation.

He also thanked him for ensuring support for economic development, as well as for the tremendous support in international forums.

Several new Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding are to be signed expanding bilateral cooperation in several fields such as fisheries, education, technology and culture.

It is anticipated that the visit will strengthen friendship and cooperation, and further and enhance bilateral trade between Russia and Sri Lanka.
