Geneva resolution passes without voting; Two year extension granted

The resolution put forward with the consensus of four countries, including the USA, for a two-year extension of the 2015 Geneva Resolutions was passed at the UNHRC yesterday without a vote.

It was passed with the co-sponsorship of the remaining 36 countries.

Sri Lanka too conceded its co-sponsorship to the resolution for the two-year extension.

The resolution regarding Sri Lanka was considered at the UNHRC’s 34th session yesterday after the Commissioner Prince Zeid Raad Al Hussein presented his report. 

On this occasion the Commissioner requested that Sri Lanka prepare a mechanism with regard to implementing the resolution passed in 2015. 

The speech in reply to the Commissioner’s report was delivered by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Harsha de Silva.
