Chief incumbent of Ancient Situlpawwa Temple Mataramba Hemarathana Thera has objected to the withdrawal of army security posts from the entry roads to Yala National Park.

Sri Lanka Army maintained camps at entry points to Yala National Park of Kochchipathana, Katagamuwa and Situlpawwa for the last 30 years.

These camps were controlled by the main camp at Palatupana.

However, Hemarathana Thera told our news team that army posts at Kochchipathana, Katagamuwa and Situlpawwa were withdrawn on March 28th.

The Thera pointed out that illegal activities including poaching could increase in the absence of army movement inside the park.

When contacted Sri Lanka Army, its media spokesman brigadier Roshan Senevirathna said army camps at Kochchipathana, Katagamuwa and Situlpawwa were removed at the request of the Ministry of Wildlife.

He also said the Situlpawwa army camp was removed due to the peaceful environment in the country.

Our news team contacted Wildlife Department’s Director General W.S.A. Pathirathna as well to comment on the matter.

He said the Defence Ministry was informed to remove the camps at the request of foreign visitors.
