Helicopter deployed to douse fire on ship

A Bell 212 Helicopter with Bambi bucket was deployed to assist the Navy and harbour authorities to douse the fire on a ship off Colombo coast.

The fire erupted in a Panama ship in the Southern seas off Colombo. 

Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walakuluge told our news team its 20 crew members have been rescued safely.

He also said the ill-fated ship was salvaged and has now been anchored 9 nautical miles off Colombo.

Egypt bound container Vessel Danila caught fire 120 nautical miles away from the southern part of Colombo.

Navy jumped to action soon after the information was received and 6 fast attack craft and several special boats to the scene.

It is reported that two tug boats were also sent to the scene by the Ports Authority.

An Indian ship which was docked in Colombo to participate in a Indo-Sri Lankan pioneering project also joined the Navy in it mission to douse fire.

Sri Lanka Navy stated that safety of all crew members were ensured by 10.30 this morning.

Navy further said that communication with the ship owner has started.

The cause for fire is not confirmed as yet. However, it is believed a technical fault could be the possible cause for the fire.
